Biography

William was born about 1830. William Barnes ... He passed away about 1917. He had come to the United States as a single man. Marrying Anna Martin on November 1, 1856 in Richmond Virginia. She was the daughter of John Martin and Anna Cole and had been born on May 25, 1840 in England. She passed on March 11, 1915 in Steubenville Ohio.

William settled in Steubenville Ohio. His occupation was listed as Coal Miner on the 1880 Census.

He had immigrated from Northumberland, England to America by way of Liverpool (assumed). It is reported that he came before 1854 so maybe around 1848-1850. As of now I haven't found a record of him on immigrantships.net, a website that transcribes ship muster lists for genealogical purposes.

The Cope Line of ships were the only ones operating the route at the time. Names of the ships they were running at the He paid for his brother George and his family to come to America in 1854. George's life story is very well documented by his great (not sure how many greats) grand daughter Joy Viehweg (see George's profile for links).

In the 1910 Census he was listed as a laborer. It lists his age at the time as 84 which seems to be incorrect. It does say that his age is estimated.

William died on January 1, 1917 in Cleveland, Cuyahoga, OH (not quite sure if he actually died in Cleveland. He is buried in Steubenville, Jefferson, OH). This may be correct though as his son Stephen was reported to have been living in Cleveland at the time.

His burial plot is listed as being at Union Cemetery Steubenville Ohio. Section 27 Lot 95 Grave/Niche/Crypt 1 Burial date January 4, 1917
