Thomas Barnes was born in 1624 in Isle of Wight, Virginia, the child of Edward and Sharon Kay. He married his first wife in 1649 in Isle of Wight, Virginia. In 1666 he married his second wife in Isle of Wight County, Virginia. He died on June 8, 1683, in Isle of Wight, Virginia, at the age of 59, and was buried in Augusta County, Virginia.

THE WILL OF THOMAS BARNES
January the 28th 1682
In the name of God Amen The last Will and Testament of of Thomas Barnes beinge of perfect memory and remembrance praysed be god doe make and ordaine this my Last Will and Testament as followeth: first I bequeath my Soule into the hands of almighty God my maker hoeping that through the meritorious death and passion of Jesus Christ my only Saviour and redemer to receive free pardon and forgiveness of all my sins: and as for my Boddy to be buried in Christian Buriall-and as for my Worldly Estate I Bequeath as followeth I give unto my Sonne John Barnes: two Cowes with Calfe or Calves by theire sides the Cowes nott to Excede five or Sixe yeares ould: likewise two Cowes of the like age with Calfe or Calves by theire sides: to my Sonne James Barnes alsoe I give unto my Daughter anne Barnes: two Cowes of five yeares ould with Calfe or Calves by theire Side: and to my daughter anne: I give a Small Table and forme which is now in the house these Catle and Table, to remaine in my loveinge wife Diana Barnes her hands till my Sonns Comes to ye age of Eighteen yeares: and my daughters tell shee is Sixtene yeares ould or married: but if either of these my Children dye: the liveinge to have the deceaseds Share Equally divided betwene the other two, all the rest of my moveables and immoveables: I leave and give to my loveinge Wife Diana Barnes: In Wittnesse hereof I have hereunto sett my hand the day and yeare above Wrighten.
