Biography

Martha was born in 1833.

When she was 16yo she married 20yo Shockley Cole, a laborer on their farm, on 29 Nov 1849 in Talladega Co, AL. They continued to live with her parents at least another year.

They lived in Talladega during the 1850's-60's, where they had several children. Their farm was close to that of her parents, her brother Drury's family and a couple other Barnes families who may have been cousins (TM & S / J & S)

They moved to Ashland, Clay Co, AL sometime during the 1860's, either before or after having 2 more kids, for a total of 8.

1863 Jan 26 Her husband Pvt Charles Shockley Cole (Co I, Reg 30, AL Infantry CSA) was killed at the Battle of Vicksburg (Meridian, MS) when he was abt 36yo, leaving Martha to be a 29yo widowed mother of 8, aged 11yo to 3mo!

1865 Nov - Their son Columbus died at 6yo...unknown why.

1870 found Martha living in Lineville, AL with 5 children, her 2 oldest presumably married with homes of their own.

1880 Martha was living in Ashland, Clay, AL with her two youngest children, 21yo Mattie and 19yo John.

1900 Martha lived in Ashland in a home she owned and was a landlord, though it's unclear to whom she rented. She could not read/write. Son John and family lived on a rented farm next door.

1910 Martha lived with son John, wife Betsy and their 6 youngest kids in Ashland, Clay, AL on their farm.

In1920, 86yo Martha was living with her youngest child John Francis' family in Wesobulga, Clay, AL, on a farm John worked for. Next door was a very young couple, Shockley & Corine Cole, presumably her grandson, John's son.

She passed away in 4 Nov 1922, just short of her 88th birthday, in Lineville, AL.
