Biography

Joseph Gilliland (b 1774 and died 1814) married Mary Barnes in 1808 (after Sarah died in 1808). Mary was born 1793 and died "after" 1871. (Richard Hardwick) (Found in 1871 census but not 1881)

43. Estate File A22 (1814): Estate File of Joseph GILLILAND, late of Digby, died intestate on 22 Sep 1814 in Digby, leaving a large family, all under age, "widow was a young women" Letters of Administration granted 4 Sep 1814 (doesn't match with his death date!) to his brother George GILLILAND and his brother-in-law Jacob BURNS of Digby. In document dated 1 Sep1817: children by 1st wife Sarah GILLILAND: William GILLILAND, eldest (to have two shares); James GILLILAND; George GILLILAND; Maria GILLILAND; Isaac GILLIALAND and John GILLILAND. Children by 2nd wife Mary GILLILAND: Sarah Ann GILLILAND; Joseph GILLILAND; Jacob Kinsley GILLILAND, born after his father's death, Mary was pregnant when Joseph died. When estate was settled, document dated 20 Mar 1829, "Mary ARMSTRONG, late widow of Joseph GILLILAND".
