Biography

Martha was born in 1842. She was married to Marion Cooper in 1859.[1] She passed away in 1930.[2]

Mrs. Martha Ann Cooper, aged 87, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Martin Loftis, 3 miles east of Cookeville on Monday, January 27th. Mrs. Cooper was the daughter of Thomas Barnes , a pioneer settler of Putnam County, and was the youngest of a family of twenty children, all of whom preceded her in death. Mrs. Cooper was married to Gabrial Marion Cooper about 1856, who died Dec 2, 1906, and to which union five children were born -- T C Cooper, Mrs. W F Hall and James Cooper, all deceased, and G W Cooper of Monterey and Mrs. Martin Loftis of near Cookeville. Mrs. Cooper had been a member of the Methodist Church for more than 70 years.... Services were conducted at the residence by the Rev Dow Ensor; burial was at Brotherton cemetery.


Thomas & Mary Barnes were Martha's adopted parents. Her birth parents were Benjamin Daniel Barnes & Nancy B. Kelly. Nancy died between 1845-1850 & the children were raised by various family members. Her birth siblings were Sarah Ann Elizabeth Barnes (abt 1835-1880), James William Barnes (abt 1838-1920), & Benjamin Daniel Barnes (1845-1920).[3]
