Biography

Marion was born on a ranch on 14 Jan 1891 Sebastopol, Sonoma Co, CA to Henry S Barnes and Kate Elizabeth Urton. He grew up there but when he reached Junior high age his mother insisted that the family move to Berkeley so he could get a better education. They kept the ranch but did move to Berkeley where Marion attended jr, high and then on to Berkeley High. From there he went to the University of California at Berkeley, where he studied mechanical engineering.

While in jr high he met Mabel Hepp Coombs, although she was younger than he. Her older sister, Eva, was in his class. All three of them attended U.of Cal, Berkeley and he and Mabel fell in love.

After graduation he secured a job with General Electric, but first he was required to go to Schenectady, New York "on test" which was required for all new hires.

Marion and Mabel did not have very much money so they used the train train trip to New York as their honeymoon.

They rented an apartment and to help financially shared It with Kurt Steindorff, who had gone to school with both Marion and Mabel from jr high through college.

On 22 NOv 1915, Mabel had a little girl, Ilene. The nurse, Blanche, who attended Mabel was unmarried and later married Kurt. The 4 of them were life-long friends and all four lived in Oakland, Alameda Co, CA.

Unfortunately, Ilene died when she was 5 months old of the Spanish Flu and she is buried in an unmarked grave in Schenectady.

The above should read that Aileen died at 7 months of age, not 5 and she is buried in an unmarked grave in the George H. Crockett family plot, Park View Cemetery, Schenectady, NY. Mr. Crockett was their landlord. Marion and Mabel did not have enough money at the time to buy a burial plot. (ed. Sue Guerra)

When the program was over they returned to Oakland, Alameda Co. and were blessed with another daughter, Margaret Elizabeth on 21 Apr 1918.

After Margaret married Richard Tharp and they moved to Orinda, Contra Costa Co, CA, Marion and Mabel also moved to Orinda "down the hill." They shared a driveway with Richard's parents.

Marion worked for General Electric in San Francisco all his life and as he neared age 65 he and Mabel made plans to travel around the world. Unfortunately, due to his heavy smoking, he died at age 64 on 10 Nov 1954 of a brain hemorrhage.
