Biography

Benjamin Barnes was baptized at the First Church of Christ (Congregational) in Farmington, Connecticut Colony in late July of 1653, on about the 26th and possibly on the 24th.[1] So, Benjamin probably would have been born before about the 24th and possibly as early as 1651, if he was about 80 years old at the time of his death in 1731.[2] He was the son of Thomas Barnes and his first wife, Mary Brockett.[3] The controversy concerning Benjamin's mother (who was executed for witchcraft) was probably the reason that Barbour listed him as a child of Thomas and an unnamed spouse.[4]

Benjamin Barnes married Sarah ( ______ ) (possibly born Ingersoll, although this is debatable, according to Torrey - see Research Note, below) before 1684, possibly in Farmington, Connecticut Colony.[5] After their marriage, they registered the births of six of their seven children in Waterbury. Based on the birth and baptismal places of their children, however, they may have moved to Farmington for two or three years, from late 1689 until 1691 or 1692, when they returned to Waterbury.

  1. Benjamin Barnes (b. Sep 1684, Waterbury,[6] bp. 1 Dec 1689, Farmington)[7]
  2. John Barnes (b. 12 Aug 1686, Waterbury;[8] bp. 1 Dec 1689, Farmington;[9] m. 28 Mar 1728, Mary (Brownson) Porter, Waterbury)[10]
  3. [Unnamed Son] Barnes (b. May 1689; d. May 1689, Waterbury)[11]
  4. Thomas Barnes (b. 11 May 1690, Farmington;[12] bp. 1 Jun 1690, Farmington;[13] m. 4 Jan 1721, Susanna Scoville, Waterbury),[14]
  5. Ebenezer Barnes (b. 15 Mar 1693, Waterbury)[15]
  6. Sarah Barnes (b. 15 Aug 1695, Waterbury)[16]
  7. Samuel Barnes (b. ca. 16 Mar 1697, Waterbury;[17] m. 4 Jun 1722, Mary Johnson, Waterbury)[18]

Benjamin was admitted to the First Church of Christ (Congregational) in Farmington on 22 Mar 1691.[19][20]

Sarah (Ingersol ?) Barnes died in Hartford, Hartford County, Connecticut Colony, on 21 Dec 1712.[21] After Sarah's death and prior to the marriage of his son, Thomas, in 1721, Benjamin moved to Waterbury in New Haven County, Connecticut Colony.[22]

Benjamin remarried in 1713 or later. His second wife was Elizabeth (Kimberly) Mallory, the widow of John Mallory.[23]

Benjamin Barnes died in Waterbury at about the age of 80, on 24 Apr 1731.[24]

Research Notes

Thomas of Farmington and Thomas of New Haven

Benjamin's father, Thomas, should not be confused with Thomas Barnes of New Haven, who married a Mary ( ______ ) and then an Elizabeth ( ______ ) and died in Middletown in 1691. Thomas of New Haven did not have a son named Benjamin.[25]

Baptismal Date

The transcribed records of the First Church of Christ (Congregational) in Farmington stated that Benjamin was baptized on "about" 26 Jul 1653.[26] Donald Lines Jacobus, writing in 1950, gave his baptismal date as, specifically, 24 Jul 1653, but did not cite a source.[27]

Was Benjamin's First Wife Sarah Ingersoll?

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Benjamin by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Benjamin:

Two things: (1) Jacobus says Benjamin Barnes was married to Elizabeth (widow of John Mallory), but gives no marriage year. Perhaps 1713, since both Elizabeth's first husband John Mallory and Benjamin's first wife Sarah died in 1712.

(2) Jacobus says the Benjamin was baptized on 24 July rather than 26 July. Not sure which is correct. The source for Jacobus: https://archive.org/details/genealogyofkimbe00jaco/page/15/mode/1up
