He served in the American Revolution. On 12 July 1776 he enlisted in the [3]Maryland Flying Camp, in Captain Edward Burgess' company of lower Frederick County, MD. He crossed the Delaware with Washington's forces on Christmas evening 1776, and during the Battle of Trenton on 26 December 1776 he was wounded by a sword and disemboweled. He received medical treatment, and recovered from his wounds; and was later able to resume his military service. In September 1777 he was listed as a private in the 1st Company, Lower Battalion, Montgomery County, MD militia. On 28 February 1778 he took the Oath of Allegiance before the Honorable Edward Burgess. (He was reported (by a grandson) to have taken part in the Battle of Yorktown in September and October, 1781.) On 13 May 1779 he married 1st Elizabeth Pigman. In about 1801 he married 2nd Phoebe Jolly, who had previously been married to John Martin. Before or after his second marriage, he moved from Montgomery County, MD to a farm on Polish Mountain, Allegany County, MD. When he died in 1812-1813, he was buried on this farm. A grave marker has not yet been found.
