Research Notes

When Em's son Thomas died his death record lists his mother's maiden name as Barnett. However, I have been unable to find any Em Barnett.

On the other hand, I am quite convinced that John did indeed marry Em Hardy in 1798. The marriage date fits with all his children. I could find no more. A lot of the records actually use the name Em, or Emm. Only a few have Emma. Significantly, the civil death registration is in the name of Em.

Searching anywhere for baptism candidates for Em I can find only one. This is:

  • Em, the daughter of Thomas & Sarah Hardey, baptized 25 February 1776 at St Michael's church, Derby.[22] This Em's birth year is perhaps a little later than indicated by her death. On the other hand, I have not been able to find any alternative sources for this Derbyshire Em.

In conclusion, this is currently my best candidate.

I have changed the last name at birth from Barnett to Hardy. Reasoning is as follows:

There is only one instance of Barnett. This was on Em and John Barnby's son Thomas' death certificate. However, Em's marriage to John Barnby is definitely Hardy. Furthermore, there is an Em Hardy baptism, albeit that the baptism year is slightly later than than the birth year suggested by Em's burial. That baptism is in Derby. I could find nothing for the surname Barnett.

On balance, therefore, I believe that Hardy is more likely to be correct.
