Susan Crawford Barnett was born on August 12, 1798, in Georgia. She was the daughter of Joel Barnett and Mildred Meriwether.
Susan married John Gresham on October 28, 1823, in Georgia.[1] They had one son - Joel Barnett.
John died on February 11, 1827. In his will, he stipulated that the land where he lived, two slaves, and other property "as may be thought necessary" should be sold in order to pay all of his debts, and the remainder and all other property (including additional slaves) should be divided between his wife Susan and son Joel. Susan and two of her brothers were appointed executors.[2]
On August 24, 1831, Susan married John Gilmer, a widower, in Oglethorpe County, Georgia.[3][4][5][6] They had five children - James, George, Susan Barnett, Charles Scott, and John.
Sometime after 1830 they relocated to Lowndes County, Mississippi (along with his brothers Thomas and James and their families), and appeared in the 1837 Mississippi Census with several children and 89 slaves (47M, 42F).[7] (From the birth dates and places of their children, it appears the move to Mississippi occurred around 1835). In 1840, the family was in Lowndes County, Mississippi, with various children and 98 slaves (58M, 40F).[8]
In 1850, John and Susan were planters in Lowndes County, Mississippi, along with five children and 108 slaves.[9][10][11][12]
John died in January 1860. In his will, his first item was to name Susan as the sole executrix, and stipulate that anyone who challenged her management would lose "all claim to what may hereafter be given to them."[13] [14] He gave amounts ranging from $2,000-$8,000 to his children, stepson, and several grandchildren, and the remainder of his financial assets, plantation and livestock, land, and slaves, to Susan. (A separate 85-page estate file provided extensive detail on the administration of this estate).[15]
In 1860, Susan lived in Columbus, Lowndes, Mississippi, with three sons, two of whom (Charles and John) were running the plantation (the oldest, James, was identified as 'idiotic' in the census). She owned 38 slaves.[16][17][18] In 1870, she was living in Columbus, Lowndes, Mississippi, next door to her son John and wife and near to other Gilmer family members. [19]
Susan died on November 4, 1874, in Columbus, Lowndes, Mississippi. She was buried at Friendship Cemetery in Columbus, Lowndes, Mississippi.[20]
Her will was written in March 1869 and probated on November 7, 1874. In it, she gave her son Joel Gresham (from her first marriage) the value of the loans he had outstanding with her. She made bequests to various children, and where children had died, their children. The remainder she left to her daughter Susan McGee and son John Gilmer, who was named as executor.[21] [22]
