Eleanor Barnett's immigration reference list her as being born in Sneinton in Nottinghamshire, the daughter of John Barnett and Harriett (nee Needham) in 1840.
The Barnett family immigrated to the South Australian Colony in 1848 on the Harpley. John Barnett was one of the Lacemakers of Calais expatriated to the Colony.[1] These workers in the many affiliated trades of the French Calais based Lace making industry chose to flee the 1848 Revolution. As they were English born or of English descent in a very anti British setting, staying behind was a dangerous decision. And instead of returning to the poor working and health conditions of English midlands, as many did, some chose to start a new life in the Australia Colonies.
Most of the Calais Lacemaker emigrants sailed to Australian colonies on one of three main vessels, The Agincourt bound for Sydney, the Fairlie also bound for Sydney and the Harpley bound for South Australia. Other groups of Lacemaker families followed in smaller groups on other vessels. These included the Andromache, Baboo, Emperor, General Hewett, Harbinger, Navarino, Nelson, Walmer Castle and there may have been others.
