He is the son of Jason Barnett and Etta Thomas
They lived at the head of Heaton Creek, Tennessee (where Squawberry is now located)
He descends from the Barnetts who migrated from Wales to North Carolina during the 1700's. There were five Barnetts brothers who are the ancestors of most Barnetts of North Carolina and Tennessee.
While in Carter County, he worked as a sawmill worker and farmer. In 1926 They moved to Johnson City (Washington County, Tennessee). He first worked as a night watchman at Harris Lumber Company. He then was a guard at the City Jail for a short time. After that, he worked at various fruit markets until he opened his own restaurant on East Maple Street. He later moved the restaurant to Fall Street. He was well known for his delicious hamburgers long before the days of McDonald's. In his last years before retiring, he operated a small fruit and candy stand on West Market Street.
