Biography

Benaiah Barney is the son of Daniel Barney I and Alice Freelove Wheaton.

According to the Vital Records of Rehoboth, page 529, Beniah Barney was born on 1/31/1741-2.

Benaiah Barney and Anne Goff, both of Rehoboth, married on 6/2/1763, according to the Vital Records of Rehoboth, page 21. Anne died on 3/16/1794. Benaiah lived until 1829. Benaiah probably remarried on 11/12/1814 as indicated in the Vital Records of Rehoboth, page 422 to Hannah Ormsbee. There was 20 years between marriages as Anne died in 1794 and Benaiah remarried in 1814 to Hannah Ormesbee. Also, Benaiah lived for 15 more years, until 1929, after marrying Hannah Ormsbee in 1814. Hannah Ormsbee may not be the 2nd wife of Benaiah as he was 71 at the time of the 2nd marriage. Benaiah lived a total of abt. 86 years.

Pages 20 and 21 of the VR of Rohoboth are given below.

According to the Vital Records of Rehoboth, page 422, Benaiah Barney married Hannah Ormsbee, both of Rehoboth on 11/12/1814. The citation was in a section entitled, "Intentions," which was for weddings that took place outside of Rehoboth.

According to the Vital Records of Rehoboth, page 20, Bethia Goff is married to Israel Barney on 10/12/1752. Israel and Bethia Barney are not currently in WikiTree (12/8/2018). Wilsonld.com says that Benaiah Barney had 3 wives, and lists the third as Bethia Goff, but this is contradicted by the Vital Records of Rehoboth, page 20.

So. . . . did Benijah not have 3 wives? 1. Anne Goff, 2 June 1763; 2. Bethiah (Goff) Barney, 17 Aug 1794; 3. Hannah Ormsbee, 12 Nov 1814. Bethiah was the widow of Israel Barney, who appears to have died in 1781. https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/125021332/israel-barney. Benijah's name does appear on that marker and Israel was probably the son of Josiah and Freelove Barney. Color me confused.

The only Beniah Barney marriage recorded in the Rehoboth VR is that to Hannah Ormsbee in 1814. What is the source for the other two marriages, please? And how do we know that this Beniah was he who married Hannah Ormsbee in 1814? Thanks.
