MARRIAGE on 21 Mar 1782 to Jerusha Jefferson in Richmond, New Hampshire, the town where both resided.[4]

Research Notes

  • There appears to be a doppelganger or at least a close cousin who was ACTUALLY born in Swansea, Bristol, Massachusetts Bay Colony on the very same day, plus or minus a year. Or not. I followed up on a list of children credited to William Barney in Family Search who were all either baptized or died, naming the father in the record, and six whose special event took place in Taunton, one in Rehoboth and one in Lakeville. NONE of those children were on the list of children found in William's FindAGrave Memorial. None appeared to have traveled outside of Massachusetts, and certainly not to New York or Illinois. Their birthdates, although not all available in that context, ranged from 1774 to 1807, with 1807 actually being an outlier. That part is consistent, but after all, both Williams were born in the early 1760s, so that is to be expected.
It seems logical that William Barney, the subject of this profile, is born in Richmond, New Hampshire, married in Richmond, and had some children in Richmond, not to mention that both he and his bride were both described as residents of Richmond in their marriage record.
  • 1790 census:
    • In Taunton, Bristol, Massachusetts: the family composition does not reflect what we know of this William Barney (it says only two females, when there were three:
    • In Stephen Town, Albany, New York:[5] the family composition matches this William's family. Do we have any clue that William left New Hampshire before this census and stayed in Albany for a bit, only to leave for Bath within a few years?
  • 1800 census in Bath, Steuben, New York[6] yields the following:
    • Males - five total: 2 under 10, 1 from 10-15, 1 from 16-25, and one from 36-44. Of these, I can identify William, the dad, and George, now a teenager (16). I therefore have to wonder who the other three might be.
    • Females - seven total: three under ten years old, two from 10-15, one from 16-25, and the last one, Jerusha, 26 to 44. So I'm missing one female between 10-15.
    • The oldest child I know about is Arvilla, who would have been nearly 18, and she is accounted for. Given a 1782 marriage, it is likely that there were one or two children before Arvilla, and therefore, since Arvilla is 18 years old in 1800, these one or two may be out on their own. Or didn't survive childhood. Or stayed in New Hampshire when William emigrated to New York.
    • So, we're missing four kids per the census information.
