Biography
When Leonard Barney was born on August 24, 1827, in Vermont, his father, Zenas, was 31 and his mother, Polly, was 23. He married Margaret Frances "Fannie" Newton on November 6, 1851. They had six children in 18 years. He was called "Captain" although no obvious regiment or enlistment military record was found. During the Civil War he lived in1864, Cincinnati, Clermont, Ohio, [1] Reportedly, the area with Cincinnati and Covington, Kentucky on either side of the Ohio River was a union stronghold, attacked by confederate troops in 1862.
1860: Leonard is a commercial merchant. with wife and child. Brooklyn Ward 7 District 1, Kings, New York, United States.
1866, the City Director lists him as editor of Cincinnati Trade List. According to American Newspaper Directory it was a 4 page news published Saturday, established 1871, manager L Barney, Trade list assn, editors and publishers. [2]
1867, the city directory lists 'Captain' Barney and also his son Robert as a printer working in a different location. Cincinnati, Clermont, Ohio, USA. [3]
1890, Avondale, Muskingum, Ohio, USA. [4]1895 in Cincinnati, Clermont, Ohio, [5] at J R Hawley's Publisher, home "Covington" likely Kentucky. So this is why census shows him in Covington Kentucky through the war years and city directories show him in Cincinnatti.
