Deacon Edward Barney
BIRTH 19 Aug 1749 Rehoboth, Bristol County, Massachusetts, USA
DEATH 9 Aug 1835 (aged 85) Ellisburg, Jefferson County, New York, USA

When Edward was 15 years old in 1764, his family moved to Guilford, Windham County, Vermont. Edward became a doctor and practiced in Guilford. In 1804, he and his father removed to Ellisburg, Jefferson County, New York in where he continued his practice.

Deacon Edward Barney was married twice. Married: 1st: Elizabeth "Betsey" BROWN on 29 Oct 1770 in Leyden, Franklin, Massachusetts, USA. She was the daughter of Benoni BROWN (1719– ) and Mabel PORTER (1724– ).

Children of Edward Barney and 1st wife Betsey Brown are as follows, all born in Guilford, Windham Co., Vermont.

Married: 2nd: Phoebe "Phebe" BENNETT on 4 Dec 1793. Phebe was born in 1769 and died in 1844. All their children were born in Guilford, Windham Co., Vermont, except the last three who were born in Jefferson County, New York, when the family moved in 1803.

Edward passed away in 1835. He is buried in an almost destroyed cemetery named Bigelow Cemetery in the town of Ellisburg, (Bigelow) near Belleville, Jefferson County, New York State. The findagrave memorial ID is 77368529. If his wife Phoebe was buried there, her grave has disappeared.

"This is to certify that of page 74 of a manuscript volume entitled "Treasurer's Certificate, Vol. 9, in the custody of the Regents of the University in the State Library, the name of Edward Barney is recorded as a Private in the Cumberland county (now Vermont) regiment of the New York State Militia, which regiment was under the command of Col. William Williams, and in the company commanded by Captain Asa Rice; and that this said regiment was employed in active service in the Revolutionary War." The father of Edward Barney and several of his brothers also served in the Revolution.
