Biography

1776 Project
Johannes Barnhart was a Loyalist in the American Revolution.

Johannes was born in 1714.

Identified by Jones based on 1734 St. Peter’s Lutheran Rhinebeck congregation list and cites Kamp confirmation May 3 1729 aged 14. He cites Loonenburg record for Mar. 21 1738 marriage to Maria Gertraud Rau and details 7 children with her and 2 children with (probably) Cornelia Ketter (p. 69f).

[1] , though some sources state 1715. [2] [3]. He passed away in 1779.

Johannes fought for the British at the Battle of Saratoga. He was taken prisoner and died in captivity.[4].

Research Notes

Possible child: Catherina Bernhard born about 12 January 1750 in Ancram, Rhinebeck, , NY

Possible child: Charles Bernhard, b 1752 New York

Possible child: John Herman Bernhard, b April 1749, New York.

I have heard that the birth year may be 1713 and the birth place was West Camp, New York. I have not found records for this.

According to : Casseilman, Alexandra C. The Palatines from the Rhineland to a New Land, 1708 to 1710. The United Empire Loyalists' Association of Canada, 1983. there were four Bernhart/Bernhard families from 1710 to 1714. Two familes are confirmed to have lived in East Camp. There other two are very likely also East Camp. The heads of the families are listed as: (1) Johann Jost Bernhart; (2) Johann Jost Bernhart; (3) Johannes Bernhard (Camp East); (4) Ulrich Bernhard (Camp East) (Yes, there are two with the same name.)

Possible Father: Johannes Bernhardt b: 9 DEC 1678 in Grosszimmern, near Darmstadt, Germany Possible Mother: Anna Eulalia Ernst b: BEF 21 MAY 1686

SJ: I believe the birth in West Camp is incorrect. I believe that is referencing the Johannes that was born in West Camp in 1712. There is documentation for that person. I believe that this person was born in East Camp.

This person was created through the import of MASTER2011WIKITREE.GED on 27 January 2011. The following data was included in the gedcom. You may wish to edit it for readability.

Middle name maybe "Georg".

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Johannes by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Johannes:

What sources are there for another Johannes in 1712?
posted by John Balow
There was a Johannes George, Johannes John, Johannes Jost, and I have been told of others. They are often all mixed up in various trees. I do not have access to the sources. It would be great to find someone who has tried to detangle this.

Barnhardt-1 and Barnhart-539 appear to represent the same person because: Clear.y the same person. Original LNAB is most likely Bernhardt.

Help please. Working with Jones (1985) makes it appear that the Johannes who married Maria Gertraud Rau did not have siblings Johann Jacob and Maria Philippina. The father(s) may also be problematic. Does anyone have a way out of this?

Barnhart-1140 and Barnhart-539 appear to represent the same person because: Before I went to add the father I did a search. Finding Johannes I saw Johanna with similar birth & death dates. I believe these individuals are the same.
