Biography

Obituary: Death of S. L. Barnhart Occurred at His Home on Barnhart's Island

Samuel L. Barnhart, a former resident of Potsdam and for many years prominently identified with its industries, died Sunday evening at about 6 at his home on Barnhart's Island on the St. Lawrence. Mr. Barnhart had long been in failing health. Funeral services will be held there this afternoon and interment will be made in the family cemetery on the Island. A number of local people will attend the funeral.

Mr. Barnhart was born on Barnhart's Island 72 years ago. He came to Potsdam as a young man and was a clerk in various stores in this village. He located here permanently about 1885 and with his brother, Harvey P. Barnhart, now of Portland, Oregon, founded the Thatcher Manufacturing Company on Depot Street. The plant was sold a few years ago and is now located at Elmira where it is in a most flourishing condition.

Mr. Barnhart was interested in the DeGrasse Paper Company, which he was instrumental in reorganizing prior to its sale to the New York World. With Bertram H. Snell and Dr. F. L. Dewey of this place and Henry Potter of Colton he purchased the Canton Lumber Company a few years ago together with large tracts of Adirondack timber lands.

More recently, he sold power rights and real estate on Barnhart's Island to the Long Sault Development Company, the island being located just below the rapids of that name in the St. Lawrence River. Ill health made it necessary for him to retire from active business and the past few years he has spent the winter at Atlantic City and the summer at his home on the Island, where he developed a fine summer property at considerable expense.

Mr. Barnhart was a man of hearty, genial personality and acute business judgment. During his residence, in this place, he took a prominent part in every movement for its betterment and was recognized as one of the town's substantial businessmen. He was a vestryman of Trinity Church for several years. During his residence here, Mr. Barnhart owned the property on Market street now owned by Congressmen Snell.

Mr. Barnhart is survived by his widow, two sons, William G. Barnhart, Third, and J. Dixon Barnhart of Niagara Falls, and two daughters Mrs. Frederic G. Paddock of Malone and Mrs. John Harrington of New York. His brother, H. P. Barnhart, also survives him.
