Biography

Trella Marie Barnhisel was born on 13 December 1904 in Akron, Fulton County, Indiana, United States. She was the daughter of Charles Wesley Barnhisel and Ruth Anna Morgan.[1] During the 1910 census, she was living on a farm with her parents and sister in Perry Township, Miami County, Indiana.[2]

Around 1915, her mother packed up the girls and moved into an apartment in South Bend, Indiana. Her father left the farm for a factory job, and during the next few years, they were divorced.[3] By about March of 1919, her father disappeared without a trace, never to be heard from again.[4] By 1920, she lived with her mother and sister in Henry Township, Akron, Fulton County, where her mother supported them by working as a seamstress. (Although the census record showed that Charles was the head of their household, this was untrue.)[5]

When Trella was 20 she married William Arvel Franklin Anderson in Fulton County. They obtained a marriage license on 24 December 1924, and were married on Christmas Day in Rochester. Daniel S. Perry, Minister, officiated.[6] Trella and Arvel had ten children -- eight sons and two daughters.[7]

By 1930, they had three young children, and were renting a home at 1411 South Edith Street in Chanute, Neosho County, Kansas, where he worked as a Baptist Minister.[8] Before 1936, the family moved to a home at 1028 East 16th Street in Pittsburg, Crawford County, Kansas,[9] and where they lived for several years.[10] By the late 1940s they moved to Jefferson, Texas, and by the early 1950s were living in Waldo, Arkansas. In 1961, Arvel and Trella moved to Longton, Elk County, Kansas, where he was called to pastor a small church. They were provided a parsonage to live in, with a large yard for a garden.[7] In 1968, they were persuaded to move to New York to live with their oldest son, but within a year they returned to the parsonage at Longton.[7]

In September 1970, Arvel had a heart attack while tending his garden in Longton. He was rushed to the nearest hospital in Independence, Kansas, but died a few hours later.[11] He was buried at Longton Cemetery.[12] Trella soon moved to a former parsonage that she purchased in Independence, where she lived for many years.[7]

Declining health finally forced her to leave her home, so she moved to a nursing home in Grove, Delaware County, Oklahoma, near her youngest son Dan. She died there a year or two later at the age of 89, on 21 March 1994,[13] and was buried beside Arvel in Longton Cemetery.[7]
