Note: Probably born at the Marion Inn Finess Street Marion SA, Australia. Had his primary education at a private school Sturt. In 1867 when Fred was 19 the family moved to Yorke Peninsula near Edithburgh. When 23 years old Frederick moved to Elliston and acquired 300 acres at `Woolshed` near Yanabie Beach. About this time, a large number of local aborigines were shot and pushed over cliffs in the area. Married Dorothea (Dorette) Mina Luck in June 1883. Took new wife to Elliston. Took 12 days on sailing ship `Lubra` in very rough seas. Early 1890s took up `Mabie` on the shores of Streaky Bay SA, Australia. 2640 acres. In 1919 had 1200 acres of wheat crop and 800 to 900 sheep. Later extended by a further 700 acres. Bred stock and racehorses including Iris Anton. Son Pat Barnes raced the Eudorous mare Fruition. 1920 retired from active farming and took up the lease on the Waverly Hotel on Unley Road. Later moved to 27 Robert Street North Unley SA, Australia.
