1. ↑ Source: #S257 Page: 9/13/1936 Data: Text: Obituary for Charles Barnum CONT Charles N. Barnum, 68 of 163 Hampden street, Indian Orchard, committed suicide by hanging from a beam in the cellar of his home about 7 am yesterday [1936 Sep 12]. Despondency because of unemployment was attributed as the motive for the act. CONT The body was discovered by his wife who notified a member of her family before police were called in. CONT Lieut. Daniel J. Twohig, in charge of the Indian Orchard police station, received word of the suicide and dispatched Radio Cruisers Matthew P. Ryan and Bernard J. F. Bergren to the scene. Lieut John F. Donoghue of the detective bureau also responded from Police headquarters. The policemen cut down the body and remained with it until the arrival of Medical Examiner Charles J. Downey, who pronounced death due to suicide by hanging. CONT Mr. Barnum was a native of Adams but had been a resident of Indian Orchard for the past 19 years, being employed by the Indian Orchard company and the Hodges Carpet company. He was a charter member of Co. N. Massachusetts National guard of Adams and a member of the Adams hose company. He leaves his widow, Mrs Leona (Bassette) Barnum; two sons, Lester and Earl, all of Indian Orchard; one daughter, Mrs. W. F. Geissler of Easthampton; one brother, William of Berlin, NY; one sister, Mrs James Ferguson of Adams. CONT The funeral will be held tonight at 8:15 at the home, Rev Herman Lohmann officiating. The body will be taken to Adams Monday morning in charge of Ratell Brothers' funeral service and services will be held at St. Mark's church there tomorrow afternoon at 2, Rev Mr. Rundell officiating. Burial will be in Maplestreet cemetery.
