Biography

This profile is part of the St Helens, Lancashire One Place Study.

John James Barr was born in 1894 in St Helens; his birth was registered in the third quarter of the year. He was the son of Peter Barr and Elizabeth (Dixon) Barr.

His brother William was born on 4 May 1896 in St Helens; his birth was registered in the second quarter of the year.

His sister Ellen was born in 1900 in St Helens; her birth was registered in the second quarter of the year.

By March 31st 1901, the family were living at 4 Herbert Street, Sutton. John's father was employed as a coal mine timberer.

By April 2nd 1911, they were still in St Helens, and John's father was still working as a dataller timberman belowground. The two eldest boys were both working aboveground at the colliery - John as an assistant lampman, William as a labourer.

By sometime in 1911, John seems to have joined the West Lancashire Field Ambulance, in the Royal Army Medical Corps, and was still with them by 1920.

John probably married Elizabeth Eva Jones in 1913 at St Helens Parish Church.[1]

John's mother probably died in the final quarter of 1940 in St Helens, aged 68.

John's father died in 1942 in St Helens, aged 74.

John may possibly have died in New Zealand in 1962.[2]
