Thomas was born in Ireland about 1830, the son of Alexander and Nancy Barr.
It is not yet known when he immigrated, but he was certainly in America by the time of the Civil War. Thomas was a 28 year old clerk of Somerville, Massachusetts, when he enlisted to serve, on September 5, 1862. He mustered in as a private in Company B of the 5th Mass. Infantry on September 19, 1862. He mustered out at the end of his 9 month term, on July 2, 1863.[1]
On March 31, 1864, he enlisted in the Army at Boston. He was described at the time of being a 28 year old clerk of Boston, with blue eyes, light hair and a height of 5'5". He was assigned to the Signal Corps. He was discharged August 25, 1865.[2]
After the war, he settled in Boston, with his wife Fannie (Merrill). [3] He was a store keeper, but had retired by 1880, when he and his wife lived in Boston with their 13 year old Fannie and his mother Nancy, age 83.[4] The census describes Thomas as having a "lung complaint", presumably the reason he was retired at the young age of 50.
Thomas died in 1882, at his home of West Fourth St. in Boston. He was 52 years old.[5] He is buried at the Cedar Grove Cemetery in Dorchester, Massachusetts.[6]
