Robert was a wool merchant but lost his business so in 1853 they immigrated to the United States. [3]
They first settled in Chicago where Amelia ran a school but again business failures forced them to move to Tennessee. There a cholera epidemic forced them to move to Austin Texas where he worked as job as comptroller for the Texas legislature.[4]
He resigned his position to avoid becoming involved in the Civil War and worked as an accountant. When the war ended he got a job as state auditor and the family moved to Galveston.
In 1867 there was a yellow fever epidemic and Robert and all three of their sons died.
