Biography

William Barr was born in Lancashire, England.

William was born in 1864, and his birth was registered in the Oct-Nov-Dec quarter of 1864 in the Ulverstone district.^[1] He was the son of Thomas Barr and Margaret (Simpson) Barr.

1871 census: William (age 6) was the son of Thomas Barr 32. a Slate Quarry Man at Beckside, Kirkby Ireleth, Lancashire, England. His mother Margaret was 28 and he had three siblings Ann 7, Jane 3 and Hartley 4 months. ^[2]

1881 census: William 16, a Railway Clerk was the single son of Thomas Barr 42, a Letter Carrier, at Sandside Post Office, Kirkby Ireleth, Lancashire. His mother Margaret was 37, and siblings Jane 13, Hartley 10, Samuel 8, Frances Dorothy 3 and George 1.^[3]

Marriage: William's marriage to Laura Henchley was registered in the Jan-Feb-Mar quarter of 1909 in the Nottingham district.^[4] Laura was a widow having been married previously to George Henchley. She also had a son George Arthur Henchley who would have been about 4 when she married William.

1911 census 18 Longford Street, Derby, Derbyshire. William 47 was a Railway clerk and wife Laura was 31. They have a son Hartley Stephen Barr age 1 born in Derby. Meanwhile Laura's son George Arthur Henchley is living with his grandmother, Laura's mother, Emma Kettel in Nottinghamshire. ^[5]

1939 register: 95 Pear Tree Road, Derby, Derbyshire. William was now a Retired Railway Clerk. Wife Laura was working and had a Grocer & Bakery Business and son Hartley was a Baker and Confectioner, and I supect worked with his mother. ^[6]

William died on 8th or 9th December 1944, and their estate passed probate on 12 April 1945 in Nottingham, England. He was living at Laburnum Cottage, Kirkby in Furness at that time. ^[7]His death (age 80) was registered in the Oct-Nov-Dec quarter of 1944 in the Ulverston district.^[8]
