Biography

John was the illegitimate son of Martha Barratt born on 26 May 1789 and christened John Race Barratt on 07 Jan 1791 in Biggleswade, Bedford. As was common at the time with illegitimate children, John's middle name was the surname of his father.[1][2]

He was not the only child born to Martha. On 4 July 1792 she gave birth to Mary Ann Race Barrott (again recorded as illegitimate). Mary Ann was christened privately on 17 April 1793 in Biggleswade.[3]

James Race was John's uncle and he married Rachel Rogers. James was a butcher and would have been the James Race that John did his apprenticeship under. James was also the master for a Louisa Vintiner from Caldecot who started her apprenticeship in 1785. James himself was taught by Thomas Button in 1776 at the age of 14.[4] [5]

So John became a butcher and learned his trade under James in Biggleswade. He started in 1807 at the age of 18. By this time his parents were married and he had dropped the surname Barratt.[6]

On 26 Mar 1815 John married Elizabeth Gillions in Northill, Bedford.[7]

John and Elizabeth had at least eight children over 20 years - six boys and two girls. Their first born son was named James Samuel.

In 1839 John had his butcher shop in High St, Biggleswade. Rachel Race (wife of James Race deceased 1809, was also a butcher in High St) In 1841 he was still living in Biggleswade and working as a butcher with his youngest sons John and Frederick living at home with him and Elizabeth.

John must have served in the Royal Navy sometime between 1841 and 1851 as in 1861 he was a patient/inmate of the Royal Naval Hospital in Greenwich Kent. He was a widower aged 74 (again the age works if his mother is Martha) and a navy pensioner. His birth town was given as Belsbury, Bedfordshire. John had been there for at least 10 years as in 1851 his wife Elizabeth and youngest son Frederic were living in Greenwich and Elizabeth described herself as the wife of a Greenwich Pensioner.[8][9] What injury did he suffer that he managed to live on for at least 13 years but was unable to leave the hospital?

John died in 1863 in Greenwich, London, England[10]
