Obituary tells us the both William and his wife died of Pneumonia while visiting in Los Angeles for the holidays. They were residents of San Diego. William served in the Civil War, came West to California in 1875. He leaves sons William H. and George N. of San Diego and Charles F. of Bakersfield and daughter Mrs Eva Kohn of Los Angeles.
"In 1885, William Barrett established the Jamul homestead and built a one story family ranch house. The Barrett family house was moved, expanded and upgraded in 1897 into a two story ranch house. William and Mary Barrett moved into the city of San Diego from Jamul around 1899. The house was then left to their son William and his family which included his wife Clara Frances, and three children; William H. jr. , Melvin D., and Stephen G. Barrett. Mr. Barrett passed away in the family home March, 1938. Clara Barrett continued to live in the house till her death in 1967. The Barrett ranch house went up for sale after Clara Barrett’s death. The property was sold to Hal and Verna Simpson in 1968." per history of the property.

I found two William H Barretts from Massachusetts in the Soldiers and Sailors Database maintained by the National Parks Service. One served in the 20th Regiment Massachusetts Infantry, the other served in the 3rd Regiment Massachusetts Heavy Artillery.
