John Barrett is Notable.
John Barrett was born in the Colony of Victoria (1851-1900)

John Edward Barrett was born on the 15 October 1866 at Emerald Hill now known as South Melbourne in the Victorian Colony. His father was a well known doctor named James Barrett and his mother was Catherine (nee EDKINS). His older brother James would go on to become a leading Collins Street Medical Specialist in Melbourne. While his younger brother Edgar would also go on to become a leading doctor in Melbourne, as well as a fine cricketer in his own right. Their sister Edith was also a doctor.

John Edward Barrett was an Australian cricketer who played two Test Matches in 1890 while touring England. Debuting against the English side at Lord's from July 21 to July 23 in 1890. In this match he became the first Test Cricketer to Carry his Bat through the whole innings. In that he not only opened the batting, but remained not out at the end of the completed innings. He played his last Test match also against England at The Oval from August 11 - 12, 1890.

At the end of this tour he stayed on to complete his medical studies and was never in a position to represent his country again. Though he continued as a First Class cricketer. He later became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons and spent time in South Africa, before returning to Australia permanently.

Jack Barrett as he was also known had also been a leading Australian Rules Footballer, playing for South Melbourne in the late 1880s and early 1890s, topping the Victorian Football Association (VFA) goal kicking in 1889 with 40 goals.

He married Annie Jessie Johnson (1869-1896) on the 1 December 1892 at the Presbyterian Church, Toorak Road, in Toorak, City of Melbourne, Colony of Victoria, Australia. She was the daughter of Archibald Johnson (1808-1881) and Ann McKenzie (1831-1899). The couple only had one son — John Lionel Mackenzie Barrett (1895-1940), born in Fulham, Middlesex, England. And the following year Annie passed away on the 7 August 1896 in the City of Brighton, Sussex, England at the age of 27.

We learn of Jack Barrett's return to Australia in 1906 from the Table Talk newspaper of Thursday 10 May 1906 as seen below:

Mr. "Jack" Barrett, the cricketer, member of four Australian touring elevens, is back in Melbourne. For three years Mr. Barrett held an Imperial appointment at the Cape, but the death of his wife and other domestic vicissitudes have evidently prompted a return to this city, where he has two brothers also in the medical, profession and other family ties.

A year after Jack's return to Australia, on the 14 April 1907, John married again to Ann Eliza Bell, daughter of James Bell, Mount Eckerlsey, Heywood, at the Christ Church Anglican Church, on the corner of McIntyre Street & Gray Street, in the Town of Hamilton, north of the coastal Town of Port Fairy, in south west Victoria, Australia. The couple were married by the Venerable Archdeacon Harris. However, the marriage wasn't a good one, as domestic issues surfaced, relating to abuse, cruelty, and physical violence. Refer to the Conjugal Troubles article below. [1].

Dr. John Edward Barrett practised in the Western Australia goldfields for many years up until his death. He passed away on the 6 February 1916 at the Peak Hill Hospital, in the Goldmining Town of Peak Hill (now a Ghost Town) in the Murchison Region, 885 km (550 mi) north east of the Capital City of Perth in Western Australia. And he is buried in the local Peak Hill Cemetery in Peak Hill Western Australia, He was still only 49 years of age and it must have been a great shock to his family.

One of his Obituaries this one in the The Argus newspaper of Thursday 10 February 1916 can be seen below:

The death is announced this morning of Dr. John E. Barrett, at Peak Hill, Western Australia, where he had been practising for some time. Dr. Barrett, who was the second son of Dr. Barrett, of South Melbourne, and the younger brother of Dr. J. W. Barrett, was educated at the Church of England Grammar School and at Wesley College. He graduated M.B., B.Ch. at the Melbourne University, and subsequently took his M.R.C.S. in England. He was a noted cric-keter in his day. He represented Victoria, in intercolonial cricket on several occasions, and was a member of the Australian Eleven which visited England in 1890.
