Biography

Samuel was born in 1823. He was the son of Benjamin Barrett and Mary Kesling. He married Frances Lewis, who was born in Ireland. They lived in New York in the early 1850's, where there is record of their son Samuel Elisha being baptized at an Episcopal Church. In the 1860 census he is living on a property next door to his father Benjamin Barrett, with his wife Frances and three small children:

  • Samuel Elisha (8 years old)
  • Mary (? year old) illegible
  • Frances (1 year old)[1]

The gap in ages, is undoubtedly due to his time in the military in the Mexican War.

Military Service

According to his Veteran's card, he was enlisted in the Army and Navy from 1846- 1849. He was discharged from 1861-1865. It's not clear why there is a date range on the card, unless he served in the Mexican war in one branch and then in the Civil war in another branch. Organization: Co. L. 2nd Reg. U.S. Army. He had the rank of Ord. Sgt.[2]

According to the History of Indiana, PA: Samuel E was an engineer on an ocean steamship in the Collins line. He was connected with the ill-fated Arctic, but fortunately was at home during her ill-fated disaster. He was in the Mexican War serving on board the Ann McKimm supply ship. He participated in the storming of Vera Cruz. He served three years and four months as orderly Sergeant of Company L 2nd US regulars, in the war of 1861, and was wounded at Fort Stevens.

He passed away in 1892.
