Biography

Robert was a twin, born at High Street Maldon. In January 1916 he was living at Palk Street Horsham and employed as a Grocer. It was here that he enlisted for W.W.1. Awarded the Military Medal for action during 58th Battalion attack on Peronne on 2nd September 1918. "For marked gallantry and conspicuous devotion to duty as a Battalion Headquarters runner...he made many runs both to Front Line, neighbouring units and back to rear Battalion Headquarters, all the while exposed to heavy shelling in the town and machine gun fire in the direction of the front." In 1925 he married Lily Marie Rissman in Horsham where they continued to reside.
