The death of Mr. Henry Barrett of 100, Webb street, on Sunday, removed another of the fast-vanishing band of pioneers of New Zealand. The late Mr. Barrett was born in Moldern, Essex, nearly eighty years ago, and came to the Dominion in the early 'seventies. Landing in Dunedin, he followed the gold-rush on the West Coast, and later resided in Christchurch. In 1894 he removed to Wellington, and for a number of years' was Inspector of Works in tie Public Work's Department, from which he retired over ten years ago. The late Mr. Barrett is survived by his widow, two sons (Mr. Henry. E. Barrett of Greymouth (Headmaster of Cobden School) and Mr. James. H. Barrett of Wanganui) and one daughter (Mrs. Ernest McFadgen, of Auckland, and ten grandchildren.
