Biography

1776 Project
Corporal Thornton Barrett Sr. served with 18th Massachusetts Bay Provincial Regiment (1775), Continental Army during the American Revolution.

Thornton Barrett Sr. is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A006719.

Thornton Barrett was born May 2, 1740, in Hopkinton, Middlesex county, Massachusetts. On October 14, 1758, in Hopkinton, Thornton married Abigail Bowker, daughter of Edmund and Elizabeth Bowker.

Thornton and Abigail resided first at Hopkington, MA, and then Winchendon, MA and then Bethlehem, Grafton county, New Hampshire. Children of Thornton and Abigail include:

  • Jerusha Barrett Wheeler, daughter, born March 20, 1775, at Winchendon, died Feburary 3, 1833, married Levi Wheeler (1775-1850) .[1]
  • Thornton Barrett, Jr. born March 27, 1777, in Winchendon, married Betsy Runnels .[2]
  • Joseph Barrett, born July 1, 1783, in Winchendon, died March 3, 1858, in Bethlehem, New Hampshire .[3]
  • Henry Barrett, born 1787, in Winchendon, died in Scioto county, Ohio.[4]

Thornton Barrett, Sr. died in June, 1806, at the age of 67 years and is buried in the Mount Washington Cemetery, in Bethlehem, Grafton County, New Hampshire. There is a photograph of his obelisk shaped tombstone on his Find A Grave memorial. [5]
