Disputed Origins

Anderson in his "Great Migration" says there is nothing to connect the person of this profile with the immigrant Thomas Barret who came on the Increase on April 15, 1635, aged 16 years. [1]

Biography

This profile is part of the Barrett Name Study.

Thomas Barret, son of Humphrey and Mary Barrett [2] married Elizabeth Mellowes about 1647. [3]

Elizabeth was baptized at Sutterton County, Lincoln, England on December 10, 1625, daughter of Oliver and Mary (James) Mellowes. [3]

Thomas drowned at Concord, Massachusetts in 1652. [3] His estate inventory taken in June, 1652 and was submitted to the court in October of that year. [4]

His father Humphrey Barrett, in his will of 1662, left part of his estate to his grandson Oliver, when he comes to the age of 21. [2]

His mother, widow Mary Barret, wrote her will on June 15, 1663, leaving part of her estate to her grand daughter Mary among others. [5]

After his death his widow Elizabeth married second, Edward Wright about 1653. [3]

  • 1671: September: Mary Barret, sister to Oliver Barret, submitted the inventory of her brother's estate to the court. [6]
  • 1672: January: Edward Wright submitted a petition relating to Oliver Barret's mother of his wife Wright and Mary Barret, daugher of Mrs. Wright. [7]
  • 1672: June 18: Captain Timothy Wheeler, Dec. Merriam and Robert Blood were appointed commissioners in the case of james Smedley and Edward Wright, regarding Thomas and Oliver Wheeler. [8]

Elizabeth died at Concord on February 1, 1690/1. [3] [9]

Children

  1. Oliver born about 1648; died at Concord in September, 1671 aged about 23 years. [3] [6]
  2. Mary born about 1651; died at Concord on July 18, 1717 in her 67th year ; married James Smedley on December 4, 1671. [3] [9]

Research Notes

Anderson in his "Great Migration" says on page 167 of Vol. I, A-B: "There was a Thomas Barrett who died in Concord in 1652 (this profile) having married in about 1647." Although the chronology is a fit for the immigrant Thomas Barret who enrolled at London as a passenger for New England on the Increase on April 15, 1635 at age 16, Anderson says, "there is nothing to connect him back to the passenger of 1635."[1]

I am a descendant of John Ingalls and Elizabeth Barrett. I am not certain after reading above if she descends from these people. Are there any sources for this? Thank you.
