Biography

Henry Barrett was an Appalachian.
Henry Barrett was an Ohioan.

THE BARRETT FAMILY by Mary Leona Schick Fabrice (1889-1979). [Note: Mary was a granddaughter of Henry Barrett and Mary Taylor]. "Through the years members of our younger generations have asked me for family information for religious or general information. Had not an older cousin written about Grandfather Schick, I would have no information of his personal life. No one wrote about Grandfather and Grandmother Barrett so I have only my own recollections. At the age of four when Grandma Barrett passed away -- Grandpa passed away before I was born. I have written my own sketchy recollection of what Mother told me. "Grandfather & Mother Barrett "English and Irish descent. Born in Ohio and went to Illinois by river routing to town of Como. Do not know the routing but we had a little horse-hide covered trunk that Mother said was brought by river route to Illinois. This trunk was given by my sister, Elizabeth to a Historical Society in Sterling, Illinois. I wonder if it is still there. "Grandfather was a cobbler. Grandmother the lady who was a good neighbor, friend, and a help, in the hour of need to the community. "Both Grandfather and Grandmother were buried by the river in Como, Illinois. The last time I went to the cemetery - the tall family tombstone was placed flat on the ground above the river's edge - their graves were under the river. Their house, which had been a land mark (purchased by new people) was gone. [Note: Their grave site has been repaired and the tombstone placed upright again]. Sterling, Illinois, Gazette, February 8, 1873, page 1: "This morning (Friday) a team belonging to H Barrett, of Portland, became frightened and started to run away, when Mr Barrett placed himself in their way to stop them. They ran over him, knocking him down, severely bruising his body and breaking both bones of his right leg, between the knee and the ankle." The Whiteside Sentinel, Morrison, Illinois, Thursday Morning, July 28, 1887, page 1: "Mr. Henry Barrett, of Como, who has resided in that place since 1848, died last Sunday, aged 78 years. He was born in Washington county, Ohio, July 15th 1809, and when he came west thirty-nine years ago he located in Como, where he has resided ever since. He was a highly respected gentleman and one who was ever ready to lend a helping hand to any movement by which the community would be benefited. His funeral took place at the church in Como, Monday, conducted by Rev. N.H.G. Fife of Sterling."

Sterling, Illinois, Gazette, Saturday, July 30, 1887, page 2: "The funeral services of the late Henry Barrett were held Monday morning in the Como church. Rev N H G Fife officiating. Mr Barrett was born in Washington county, Ohio, July 15, 1809. He came west in 1848 and had lived in Como thirty-nine years."

His death certificate also gives his age at death as 77 years, 11 months and 23 days; his occupation as farmer and his date of death as July 28, 1887 at 4:00 p.m. His marital status is given on his death certificate as married, and his nationality is given as American, with his place of birth as Pennsylvania, and his place of death as Como, Illinois.
