Seymour had limited formal education which ended after finishing the 3rd grade due to his father's, James W. Barrett, death. His older brother, James R. Barrett, was not able take responsibility for Seymour and so he was given food & shelter by a general store owner who took in orphans in exchange for working there. He lived there for 2+ years and during that time another orphan, a black boy who could read & write, taught him to be literate. This experience greatly affected Seymour and he raised his children (11, of which 9 lived to adulthood) to not disrespect blacks. When his brother, James R., was able to get work that paid enough to support both of them, Seymour moved to live with his brother. James and Seymour bore a very strong physical resemblance. They both were farmers their whole lives. James was very healthy, living a long life and passed away in his eighties while plowing his fields behind a mule. Seymour suffered from occasional palpitation episodes, a trait which has been inherited by successive generations. Seymour maintained a positive attitude about life despite several tragedies, including losing his home in a fire and later losing his farm during the great depression. Seymour and wife Mattie were very strong believers their whole lives and were highly regarded in the community.
