Biography

Nelson was a Friend (Quaker)

Nelson Barrington of Wexford married Mary Varman of New Ross in a Quaker ceremony at Lambstown on 5 July 1718. [1] This was his only entry in the Quaker records.

Nelson Barrington, wool comber of Wexford, entered into a deed with a James Harvey dated 10 August 1722, in which he assigned his right to a legacy of £20 plus interest from his father Thomas Barrington to Harvey in return for £20. [2] (His father died in 1719 and left the money to Nelson only after the death of his wife. See his father's profile.)

Research Notes

No birth or death record located. Birthdate estimated based on marriage date.

An entry in the Register of Marriages for Wexford has been wrongly transcribed by FindmyPast, showing his parents as Jacob and Ruth. Careful inspection of the image shows that the parents Jacob and Ruth relate to the line above. [3]

In The Barringtons: A Family History, [4] Amy Barrington speculates that Alexander Barrington, of Barretstown, Co. Kildare, who left a will dated May 1st, 1775, and proved 2nd April, 1785, might have been his son, and that Nelson Barrington, whose will was proved in 1837, might have been a descendant. However, she does not have sufficient information to be certain. She also refers to a Mark Barrington, whom the Quakers note to have been married by a priest in 1754, whom she thinks may have been another son, and who had two children William and Isaac, both of whom were also recorded as having married out.

More research is required into this branch of the family.
