Antoine Barrois was born in France circa 1641 (date based on his reported age of 40 in the census of 1681).[1] Antoine is said to be the son of Jean Barrois and Marie Tournel, of the parish of St-Nicolas Chantil, in Bourbonnoys, diocese of Bourges & Berry, on his marriage.[2] This location has been identified more precisely, it is Chantelle in Bourbonnais (now Allier department), and his parents were named Jacques Barroys and Marie Tourret.[3]

His name is first recorded in a 1667 list of French settlers at La Prairie de la Madeleine, on the south side of the St-Lawrence River, opposite Montréal. He is listed as "Antoine Barroy," [6] The 1681 census recorded him as 40 years old and a surgeon, residing at La Prairie.[7]

Marriage

Anne Le Ber and Anthoine Barroye entered into a marriage contract on 11 January 1672 in Montréal before notary Bénigne Basset.[8][9]

Anne Leber was married to Antoine Barrois at Notre-Dame de Montréal on 12 January 1672.[10][11][12][13] Six children of their marriage were baptized at La Prairie between 13 September 1672 and 16 January 1683.[14] [15]

Antoine sold his property at La Prairie on 16 November 1682. In the fall of the following year the family relocated to Albany, New York, where on 5 November 1683 "Antho. Barwa" requested permission to dwell, on behalf of himself, his wife Annetje Lieber, and their six children. He took the oath of allegiance at Albany on 6 January 1686/7. He died at Albany some time thereafter, and before 20 December 1689, when his widow remarried.[19]
