Ames Daily Tribune - January, 27, 1971

A 79 year old Cherokee County man who claims to have invented the show plow in 1927 and the round corn bin in the 1930's has come up with an invention he believes can help air pollution in the nation's largest cities, John Barry Sr., a retired farmer who lives in the pollution free town of Marcus, said he became aware of the mounting air pollution problem seven years ago when he and his wife visited their daughter in California "Our eyes watered and our heads ached," Barry said. "I just decided that the newspapers out there were right. We have to get this stopped." After two solid years of studying the gyroscope and five years of work in his basement workshop, Barry has invented a machine that can produce power without the use of fuel gas or Water. Barry said he has received several inquiries about his invention from large companies, including General Motors and Ford Motor Co., but "they won't commit themselves to help me out." "They just want to know everything," Barry said, "but they don't promise to do anything." Barry is fearful of dealing with the big companies and said his patent attorney has advised him to say nothing unless the companies' offer him a contract. The 700 - pound machine, made from parts cadged from area junkyards, has only three new parts. The invention has two gyros each weighing 74 pounds and power is provided by a battery that drives a set of gears connected to a flywheel. Barry said the machine will run.
