Born Bridget Catherine Barry on March 11, 1881, in Lauragh, Inagh, West Clare, Ireland, she was the thirteenth of eighteen children. Bridget came to America in 1900 and attended Northwestern University and Detroit Teachers’ College, receiving a bachelor’s degree from Siena Heights in Adrian.
Bridget entered the Dominican Order in 1912 and became "Sister" Mary Gerald Barry. Rev Mother Gerald was elected Mother General of the Adrian Dominican Sisters in 1933. She served in this position for twenty-eight years.
Note: "Mother" is a title for the head of Catholic nuns or "sisters". "Mary Gerald" was her chosen Catholic nun name. Therefore she was called "Mother Mary Gerald".
Mother Gerald Barry, Prioress General of the Dominican Sisters of Adrian, Michigan, was –along with her brothers Patrick and William- cofounder and first president of Barry College in Miami Shores, Florida, United States.
Pope Pius XII awarded Mother Gerald the Lateran Cross for outstanding service to the Church.
Rev Mother Gerald Barry passed away Nov 20, 1961. She was buried at the Adrian Dominican Sisters Cemetery Burial or Cremation Place in Adrian, Lenawee County, Michigan, US
