DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships by comparing test results with William or other carriers of his ancestors' Y-chromosome or mitochondrial DNA.
Y-chromosome DNA test-takers in his direct paternal line on WikiTree:
William Barry:
Family Tree DNA Y-DNA Test 111 markers, haplogroup R-M269, FTDNA kit #IN35912
Follow-up from my post on YDNA testing. There were no matches with any other Barry family so far. As I can trace my paternal ancestors back as far as 1813 with certainty I'm guessing/hoping that any Barry relatives just haven't been tested yet.
I used Family Tree DNA's Y37 test and got the results but no matches. The response I received from the administrator told me, "you seem to be in a previously undiscovered branch of the Barry family, where no one else has tested." It seems, therefore, that I'm back to square one!
The links are not as certain; however, I have found baptism records that may be for Robert Barry (my great great grandfather) and his son, Robert. The elder was baptised in 1813 in Cork City and the younger in November 1831 in Innishannon, Co. Cork, 23km west-southwest of Cork. There is also an 1830 marriage record in Innishannon for Robert Barry and Ellen Hurley who are the parents of the younger Robert. There is a record in 1834 for William Barry, son of Robert and Ellen Hurly. He did not arrive in New York with them in 1836 and may have died in childhood. They had another son, William Robert in New York and he and his wife had a son William Francis who died at two. A later child was then named William Francis Barry - my grandfather!!
I've hit a bit of a wall in my search. I'm very confident in the ancestors that I've added to the tree but it gets more iffy going further back. Robert Barry's parents may have been William Barry and Margaret Conway from Cork. I found a baptism record with those names but I cannot confirm they are his parents. I still cannot find the birth name of his wife, Ellen. I hope to visit some cemeteries in the U.S.A. later this year where I may find more information.
