In 1169, Robert de Barry was with a large party of relatives including his uncle Robert FitzStephen, Miler Fitz Henry, Milo Fitz David, and Hervé de Marisco at the seige of Wexford [1]
In 1185, two castles were built by Prince John in 1185 to guard the northern border of Waterford, Ardfinnan Castle at the crossing on the River Suir and Lismore Castle to guard the river crossing on the Blackwater. The Irish attacked the fortifications at Lismore, opposing its construction; Lismore Castle was taken by surprise and Robert de Barry, governor of the castle was slain along with all the castle garrison.
Note : There has been some discussion about the identity of the Philip De Barry killed at Lismore as it is known that Philip De Barry did retire to Kent after his service in Ireland. He may have returned for a further period of service. [2] [3]
