Biography

William Barsham's origins are unknown. His date of birth is estimated at 1610, based upon an approximate date of his marriage (in 1634/5).[1][2][3]

The first known mention of Barsham in Massachusetts was on 28 September 1630, when he appeared as a witness to the death of Austen Bratcher. [4] Almost seven years later, on 9 March 1637, he was made a freeman, [5] and served on a petty jury in September of that same year. [6]

It seems likely that Barsham worked as a carpenter, as he was instrumental in assessing work on building the meetinghouse in Watertown in 1652/3[7] and on 19 Jan. 1662/3 he helped determine what repairs were necessary to the town's Mill Bridge.[8] The fact that he eventually left to his son Nathaniel all his tools and his furnace kettle (used to melt metals) suggests he may have also worked as a glazier.[1]

William Barsham probably had some education as he signed his will and codicil, and owned a Bible and “four old small old books.”[1] He was elected selectman on 22 Dec. 1652, clerk of weights and measures on 26 Feb. 1655/6 and served on the committee for the proprietors of the farms beginning 6 Oct. 1662.[1][2][3]

He was granted thirty acres in the Watertown Great Dividend on 25 July 1636, three acres in Beaverbrook Plowlands on 28 Feb. 1636/7, three acres in the Remote Meadows on 26 June 1637 and a farm of eighty-eight acres on 10 May 1642. In the 1644 inventory of grants he also seems to have had six acres of upland in the town plot.[9]

Marriage and Children

William was married by 1634/5 to Anabel Smith, alias Bland, daughter of John Smith, alias Bland.[10][11] She was probably born in about 1615, and had died by August 23, 1683, as she was not mentioned in his will of that date. They had nine children, all born in Watertown.[1][2][3]

Death

William Barsham died at Watertown on 13 May 1684.[26] His will, dated 23 August 1683, made no mention of his wife (who is presumed to have predeceased her husband) but included bequests to each of the above named children. His will was probated August 29, 1684.[1][2][3]

Should his wife also be PGM? It looks like she came over with her parents.

You're correct, there is no evidence that he was on the "Mary and John". A category for him being a passenger on that ship in 1630 was placed on his profile... I removed it.

Jeffrey, I found no claim in the narrative that he was on that ship. What are you responding to? That said, i've added a notation in the narrative.
