Biography

Birth

Joseph Barstow born in Scituate, Plymouth, Massachusetts on January 22, 1675. [1] He was was the son of Joseph Barstow and Susanna Lincoln Barstow. He was The spelling of the surname in this record was Berstow. [A]

Marriage

Joseph married Mary Randall in 1699 in Scituate. [2] The surname spelled Bearstow in this record.

Children - Joseph and Mary seem to have had numerous children who died young. There seem to be two Joseph's who died young and one Joshua and one James who did not survive and had additional sons given those names. At the time Joseph wrote his will, he had three daughters and two sons surviving. His oldest daughter was married to Elijah Cushing and all the remaining children were minors. (See Below)

Residence

The original location of Scituate was later divided and in 1717 the western part became Hanover. Although Joseph was born and died in different places (Scituate and Hanover) he likely lived in the same area his whole life. His burial location may be identified as Norwell which is another western section that was renamed in 1849.

Occupation & Business Interest

Joseph, of Scituate, purchased land from Gersham Bradford on February 7, 1721. The record indicates it was "land given to me by my father's will, where my dwelling house now stands." [9]

In 1720 the town of Scituate granted two acres of land on Indian Head River to Benjamin Stetson and Joseph Cushing "for accomodation of a forge and tinery." A bridge was build across the river this year and Barstow and Stetson erected a forge which was known as BARSTOW'S FORGE. Capt. Joseph Barstow was also interested in a grist mill, a sloop and a large land owner." [10]

Death

Joseph died on July 25, 1728 in Hanover. [11] This reference indicates the information came from a gravestone record at the Second Church Cemetery in Norwell, Massachusetts. He was buried in the Church Hill Cemetery, Scituate, Plymouth, Massachusetts

Probate

His will was signed on July 15, 1728 in Hanover (Hannover), Plymouth, Massachusetts. He left one third of his real and personal estate for Mary's use during her lifetime. At her death he willed that it be distributed in the same manner that he listed for the remainder of his estate. The remainder of the estate was to be divided into seven equal parts. His sons, James and Joshua, were to receive a two/sevenths share. His daughters were each to receive a one/seventh share.[3]

His will was proved on October 4, 1828 [12] An inventory of his estate was taken on August 27, 1728 which shows that he was quite wealthy with diverse investments.

Research Notes

A.The spelling of the surname in primary source records varies greatly. (Barstow, Bastow, Bearstow, Bersto, Berstowe, Bestow, Bestowe)

His first name was the same as his father and he is usually identified as Jr. He was identified as Capt. on the grave marker.
