Jacob F. Bartel was born June 8,1858 in Mariavohl, Molotschnia ,South Russia. His parents were Jacob & Agatha(Fast)Bartel. His father passed away when he was 14 years of age. With his mother and younger brother John, they emigrated to America by way of Steam Ship Harmmonia landing in New York on July 17th 1874 (one record says July 4th).Their first few months were spent at Williamsville New York. On September 7th of the same year they came west to Nebraska reaching their new homestead, one and one half miles west of where the town of Jansen is now located. Jacob adjusted quickly to American customs and could speak English within six months. In 1878(some records say 1879)Jacob was baptized in the Mennonite faith by Elder Abram L. Friesen. On January 16th 1881 he was united in marriage to Katherine Flaming and settled down on a farm his mother had bought engaging in livestock raising and auctioning. To this union eleven children were born,3 proceeded him in death. On July 15th ,1906 Jacob suffered a stroke of apoplexy which caused him to be invalid for 33 years. He passed away on October 21st, 1929 at 4 A.M. at the home of his daughter Mrs. I.C.(Marie) Friesen. He leaves behind his wife, eight children, Mrs. I.C. Friesen, Mrs. John K.(Anna) Friesen , Mrs. J.C.(Katie) Friesen, Mrs. C.W.(Agatha) Rohrbaugh, John, Henry, J.C., Dave, and John Bartel, several grandchildren and a brother John of Meade Kansas.
