  • Andrew Jackson Bartholomew's Obituary
09 Jul 1902 Boscobel, Wisconsin
Obituary, Boscobel Dial paper, July 9, 1902
"A GOOD MAN GONE
A.J. Bartholemew dies at his home in this city, Wednesday evening, July 2, 1902, of general complications, aged 74 years and 6 months. Funeral services were held from the Cong'l church Friday afternoon, Rev. Bond officiating. The members of the John McDermott post acted as an escort for their fallen comrade to the cemetery.
Deceased was a native of Ohio and early in life moved with his parents to Indiana, then to Illinois and finally to Wisconsin, where they settle in Iowa County. barely reaching his majority, the deceased determined to seek his fortune in the gold fields of California where he labored for fifteen years with considerable success. In years after it afforded him genuine pleasure to recall the exciting events that made the history of that Eldorado famous the world over. When the war broke out, he at once enlisted in the cause of his country serving well and honorable for three years or more with Co. B, 4th Cal. Inf. Upon being mustered out he came to this city and in 1866 he purchased the old homestead in Marion. Tho same year he was united in marriage with Miss Mary L. Watrous who, with five sons and two daughters are left to mourn the loss of a kind and affectionate husband and an indulgent father. Late last fall the worthy couple moved to this city to reside, purchasing a comfortable home in the second ward, and this untimely, though not unexpected demise cuts short the hope and expectations of the loved ones left behind.
In Mr. Bartholemew's death this vicinity loses one of its most upright and honorable residents and we extend to the bereaved family the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community."
