Notes

Elizabeth Bartholomew Harper history tells about Dorothy's Mother being carried out of France to Germany in a box. This person was Elizabeth's mother's mother.

Book by Jane Cowles Ford. Pg. 15.

Elizabeth Bartholomew was the daughter of John Bartholomew and Dorothy Ent.

The maternal grandmother (Sibbilla Stratton) of Elizabeth Harper was a "French Huguenot"and at the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes, in 1685, she was sent in a chest from Paris to Germany. The journey occupied 12 hours and was made in safety by the girl of 12 years. Her parents afterward made their escape and joined her in Mentz, Germany, where she married a man named Ent, a native of Berne, Switzerland.

From Mentz the family moved to Munich, Germany and their daughter Dorothy Ent married John Bartholomew and emigrated to Germantown, Pa. where they soon after induced their respective parents to join them.

From Germantown they moved to Bethleham, New Jersey. It was here that their 16th child, Elizabeth was born 13 February 1794. She had one sister (Mrs. Skinner) younger than she.

Married Alexander Harper in Wooster, Ostego, New York 30 July 1771. They went immediately to their home in Harpersfield, Deleware, NewYork. In the course of time 8 children were born to them. - Pg. 16.

In 1798 she moved with her husband and family to what was then called "New Conneticut" now known as the "Western Reserve" Her eldest daughter who was married to a Mr. Wheeler remained behind and her eldest son was in Canada, but four sons and two daughter came with her. They landed from small boats at the mouth of the creek now known as Cunningham Dreek in the present township of Madison, Ohio, having come from Buffalo, New York. Immediately after landing, Colonel Harper accompanied by the women of the band, comprising Mrs. Harper and two daughters, one aged 14 ( Elizabeth) the other 12 years ( Mary), Mrs. Gregory and 2 daughters of the same age, Captain Harper's sister, Mrs. McFarland and an adopted daughter started for what was to be their new home, near the site of the present village of Unionville. -Pg. 17.

1799 Joseph Harper joined Elizabeth and her family. Pg. 18.

During the War of 1812, the Harper brothers were actively engaged, both in Civil & military capacities. William was a member of the State Legislature the second year of the war, while James accepted a Captain's commission. The two younger brothers were in actual service in the Northwestern Army. - Pg. 26.

Elizabeth departed this life 11 June 1832 in the 84th year of her age. Her grave is also in the Alexander Harper Memorial Cemetery. Graves were probably in Harperfield until counties changed.

Shandy Hall is now in Unionville, Ashtabula, Ohio.
