Biography

William was the son of Thomas Bartholomew and Mary. He was born in Stone by Dartford Kent in 1781. His parents baptised^[1] him on the 22 Jul 1781 at St Mary the Virgin, Stone near Dartford.

He had two older brothers and two younger brothers all born in Stone near Dartford. His sister Elizabeth died before he was born. His father Thomas died in Swanscombe when William was 19 in 1800.

William married^[2] Mary Bird on 19 Nov 1804 at the parish church of St Botolph in Northfleet Kent. Their witnesses were Edward Martin and E. Best.

William and Mary must have moved to nearby Darenth after they married, and lived there until about 1810 as their first four children: Sarah, Mary, Thomas and William were baptised there. In 1813 they had two children Louisa and Sarah baptised in Swanscombe. Then from 1815 five more children were baptised in Stone near Dartford: Esther, Francis, Eliza, Caroline and Phoebe. Phoebe died aged 1 in 1827. Louisa died aged 16 in 1829 in Greenhithe and son Thomas died in 1830 aged just 21 also in Greenhithe.

In 1839 ^[3]William was described as a market gardener in Swanscombe. His wife Mary died on 21 Jan 1841. In the census^[4] that year William and his daughter Caroline aged 15 were living with Samuel Patience and his wife Sarah. Sarah was William's daughter and Caroline's sister. William was described as an agricultural labourer. James Bennett aged 20 was also there with them at Lamb Cliff, Stone near Dartford.

William died^[5] on 5 Apr 1855 at Cooks Row, Greenhithe, Kent aged 73. Eliza Taylor was the informant and was present at his death. His death certificate received from the General Register Office England and Wales (received Feb 2000) says that he was a dealer in fish and the cause of death was asthma.
