Biography

Samuel Bartlett was part of one of the strangest events in the early history of Northampton, Massachusetts — he was the accuser in a witchcraft trial. Samuel married Mary Bridgman in 1672 and two years later, she died suddenly. Samuel came to believe that a woman named Mary Bliss Parsons had performed witchcraft which killed his wife. Samuel's in-laws had once been involved in another accusation of witchcraft against the same woman and joined Samuel in charging her again. See the rest of the story at: AncestorBios blogspot with additional primary source transcriptions at American Ancestors.

Samuel was admitted a freeman in 1661. He was wounded on May 13, 1704 in the same fight that killed William Holton. In 1705 he was one of a committee to set up the first poor-house, he was a Selectman in Northampton and owned a grist-mill in the south part of Northampton, now Easthampton, the ownership of which was in the same family for 175 years and the site of which has ever since been known as Bartlett's Mill.

Sam(ue)ll Bartlet of Northampton presented to this Court on September 26, 1676, the weak & unfit estate & condition of Nath(anie)ll Bartlett to manage the portion 7 estate to which by his father's will he is become a legatee. This court have therefore appointed Sam(ue)ll Bartlett his brother and Medad Pomeroy to be as overseers & helpful to him, leaving the management of the said estate to them & the disposing of it for the said Nath(anie)ll Bartlett's maintance

Bridgestreet Cemetery where many of the Bartlett's are supposedly buried, is an interesting site.. From an understanding from the Librarian Elise Feeley, the Bridgestreet Cemetery was widen to make more room for more inhabitants.. Since that was done, Graves and bodies were moved and Markers were broken.. So it goes that no one even knows the wear abouts of some of our earlier Bartlett's..

  • Before seeing any of the City Cemeteries, please stop by the Public Works department located past Smith College on -9 near the Hospital.. Once there see the superintendent of the City Cemeteries and he is the only one with the map and location of the Bartlett's in any of the City Cemeteries.. ***
