History of Mc Donough County, Illinois, published 1885 by the Continental Historical Company, Springfield, Illinois. It has 1158 pages. In possession of Lois E. Dezutti, 3333 Danaha St., Torrance, Cal. Chapter 39, Walnut Grove Township, page 1015 -
"The pioneer settler of Walnut Township was Isaace Bartlett, who came from the state of Tennessee in the fall of 1830, settling on section 34. After eresting a cabin, he left his father and mother there and went over to the vicintiy of Spring Creek in Emmet Township, to work at breaking prairie. While here at work the memorable deep snow came and it was many days of unsuccessful attempts before he succeded in getting back to his aged parents, who he waa aware, must be in desittiue circumstances. He found them in a half starved and frozen condition with nothing to eat and but little fuel to protect them in their rudely constructed habitation from the bitter blasts of one o f the worst windrers in the histoyr of Mc Donough County. The family cow, which had died of exposure and starvation was all that was left to eat and upon the arrival of the son who had been several days in coming from Spring Creek settlement with the three yoke of oxen, a sled and provisions, he found the old gentleman at work removing the hide from the carcass of the dead cow, preparatory to getting something to appease their hunger. The old folks partook of the provisions brought by the son, who soon afterward removed them to where he was stopping on Spring Creek."
p. 203 - The commisioners of the county met on July 5, 1830. They divided the county into three districts and provided for the election of justices of the peace and constables in each district. The districts were each eight miles wide. On the first Saturday in August an election was held in each district, In the third disctrict Isaac Bartlett was appointed as judges of election in the thrid district. At a meeting held on the first Monday in September 1830, Isaac Bartlett was appointed county surveyor.

While surveying this tract of country (near Walnut Grove Township, McDonough County, Illinois) , we found a house which
had the appearance of being lately built, but which was then un-
occupied. Isaac Bartlett afterwards told me he built the house in
the fall of 1830, with the intention of moving in it; but having
raised a crop on Spring Creek, which he desired to feed out before
moving, he placed his aged parents in the new house, in order
that he might hold his claim. This was in the winter of 1830-31,
a winter that no old settler can ever forget, the like of which has
never been experienced since. Others may probably have told
you of some of the horrors of that long winter. It is hard to
describe. The elder Bartlett and his wife were in the cabin when
the snow fell. They had with them a cow which provided the
milk for their use. When the snow ceased falling, Isaac Bartlett
took his sled, and hitching a yoke or two of oxen to it, started
for the residence of his parents to bring them away, but the
snow was so deep he could make no headway, and night coming
on, he had to await another day, when he again made the
attempt to reach them. It was five days before he finally got
through. He found his parents without food of any kind, the
cow dead, having died from hunger and cold, and his father in
the act of dressing it for the purpose of eating. Having brought
provisions with him, their immediate wants were supplied, and
the next day all returned to Spring Creek. Such were some of
the experiences of the early settlers in this county.
Respectfully, J. W. Brattle [2]
