Disputed Son, Robert Barlett of Plymouth Colony

CAUTION: There is no proof that this Robert Bartlett was the father of Robert Bartlett, the immigrant to Plymouth Colony. See the quality sources on that profile for further explanation. Please do not try to attach him to this profile as a son.

It should be noted that sources on Robert Bartlett discuss and dismiss The American Genealogist article (TAG 55) cited on this profile as lacking sufficient information to prove the relationship.

Biography

Robert Bartlett, son of Robert and Alice (Prout) Bartlett was baptized at Puddletown, Dorset, England on March 28, 1567. [1]

He married Alice Barker at Puddletown on October 6, 1589. Known children of Robert, with wife Alice and possibly (but not certainly) with another unknown wife were:[1]

  1. Liddea, baptized Aug 2, 1590; buried November 8, 1612
  2. Ruth, baptized February 22, 1591/2
  3. Mary, baptized March 4, 1593/4
  4. Edithe, baptized January 23, 1596/7
  5. Martha, baptized November 5, 1698
  6. Richard, baptized February 7, 1600/1
  7. Robert, baptized May 27, 1603 (per this source, believed [but without proof] to be Robert Bartlett of Plymouth Colony)
  8. John, baptized February 1, 1605/6
  9. Elizabeth, baptized January 10, 1607/8
  10. Izobell (Isabel), baptized December 25, 1608
  11. Beniamin (Benjamin), baptized June 3, 1611
  12. Robert, baptized September 18, 1614

"This Robert married a Piddleton girl named Alice Barker at St. Mary's on 16th October 1589, and the couple went to live at Fordington where they had 5 known children Liddia (2.8.1590), Ruth (22.4.1591), Richard (17.5.1592), Martha (5.11.1598) and Robert (27.5.1603); there may have been another son named John."[2]

(NOTE: The information below is apparently referring to Robert born 27 May 1603, who the source alleges, without proof, is Robert Bartlett, and is a direct quote from the source shown.)
"The youngest, Robert, sailed with the Pilgrim Fathers on the "Anne" to America in 1623, followed later by brother Richard, and his son, also named Richard, on board the "Lillian & Frances" in 1632. Their stories are told, along with their descendants, in the histories of the States of New Hampshire and Massachusetts but sole details of their families etc., have been included in the support documents to this history."

No death information is available for the Robert Bartlett of this profile; no sources show that he immigrated to New England or died in Plymouth Colony.

I've researched the TAG55 source which shows the parents and children of the Robert of this profile. The TAG55 article makes a case for this Robert as the father of Robert Bartlett, primarily through circumstantial evidence such as Robert Bartlett of Plymouth's first child's name being Benjamin (the same as a brother of the 1603-born Robert), as well as through educated guesses as to the parentage of some of the children of this Robert.

Anderson, in his Great Migration article on Robert Bartlett of Plymouth Colony, acknowledges the TAG55 article by Paul Prindle (and another, TAG 35:214 by John Hunt) and says the Robert Bartlett of this profile being the parent of Robert Bartlett of Plymouth remains "only a possibility" (GMB 1:116).

Since this Robert Bartlett was never reported in Plymouth, and with a death in 1655 unsupported by sources - or by a review of death information in Massachusetts, I have removed both the death date and place. Additionally, I have removed the PGM template from this profile.

Due to the likelihood that someone will attempt to attach another son Robert Bartlett, duplicative to Bartlett-297, I think this profile should be made a PPP, as a PGM Adjunct.

Anne, last year you added a comment that his parents had been disproven, but the bio has a semi-recent (post mid-20th century) source for it. Was that article disproven? If so, when and by whom?

Hi Anne, I'm not much help here at all. I have not studied this line at all and don't want to give you any wrong information. Thanks for your diligence on this.

These parents are unproved. They should be removed from Bartlett-297. Objections??

In addition, Did they really come to New England during PGM or are they being confused with their son?

Bartlett-7377 and Bartlett-306 appear to represent the same person because: Alleged parent of Robert Bartlett who sailed on the Ann

Are there any quality sources for his birth information, especially the date?
posted by S (Hill) Willson
Bartlett-306 and Bartlett-7377 do not represent the same person because: Dates of birth are more than 10 years apart.
Bartlett-7377 and Bartlett-306 appear to represent the same person because: Same approx birth year, in same birth place. Son, Robert on both profiles, both born in 1603. No further information and no sources on-7377. Please merge.
